Statement

The artist collaborative, BOKA, comprised of JoAnn Boehmer and April Katz chose to initially focus on plants, specifically roots. The work metaphorically examines social, psychological, and political concerns that also reference individual and collective histories and memory. This work celebrates the beauty and diversity of plant forms while examining the interactions, both beneficial and detrimental, between plants, humans, animals and the environment. Roots are the epitome of a system that operates unseen. The work emphasizes visual and symbolic interpretations of roots as a means to explore physical and social environments.
