Root Bound Drawings
The Root Bound drawing series metaphorically refers to a plant whose roots have been contained for too long. This condition forces the roots to become entangled and inhibits growth. These large drawings employ well-known symbols to reveal possible limiting impacts family, religion and nutrition can have in shaping human development.
“A”, “C”, “G”, and “T” refer to the nucleotide bases that comprise all DNA molecules and determine our genetic identity. In the drawing they surround the roots bound by a house. In another drawing roots fill a generic house of worship and are framed by symbols of various religions. In one of the other large drawings, the silos symbolize mass storage of well-known crops such as rice, corn and wheat, used to feed the people of the world.
